Descript Pricing (2026): Every Plan, the Real Cost Per Media Hour, and Why Business Is Not the Bigger Creator

Every number on this page was read off Descript's own pricing page on 2026-09-02. The per-hour and per-credit figures are ours: Descript publishes prices and publishes allowances, but never the division between them, and the division is where the surprises are.

One structural fact before the table, because it changes what every price below means:

Descript meters two budgets that run out independently. Media hours limit how much footage your projects hold. AI credits limit how much generative work you do to it. Upgrading for one gets you more of the other whether you needed it or not, and the tier that is best value on hours is not automatically best value on credits. As it happens, here, it is — but you should check that rather than assume it.

The Plans

Prices, allowances and feature gates verified on descript.com/pricing 2026-09-02. Descript's pricing page advertises "saving up to 35% over monthly plan" on annual billing; the annual column is the per-person, per-month figure shown under that toggle. Enterprise adds SSO and SCIM, Brand Studio, translation with proofreading, and a dedicated CSM.

The Cost Per Media Hour

This is the arithmetic Descript does not print, and it is the reason the price list is not shaped the way you would expect.

Read that column twice. The curve is not monotonic. Creator is the cheapest media hour Descript sells, and Business — the tier above it, costing more than twice as much — is about 56% more expensive per hour. Price lists do not normally behave this way, and the reason this one does is that Business is not a capacity tier at all.

The marginal arithmetic makes it plainer. Going from Creator to Business on annual billing costs an extra $26 per month and buys an extra 10 media hours. That is $2.60 per additional hour, against Creator's own blended rate of $0.80. If you are upgrading for hours, you are paying more than three times Creator's rate for them.

The Cost Per AI Credit

The second budget, priced the same way:

Creator wins again, though by much less. The important point is the shape: on both meters, Creator is the value floor and everything above it is more expensive per unit. That is unusual enough that it should change how you buy. Most price lists reward volume; this one rewards stopping at the middle tier.

So What Is Business Actually For?

Seats, credit headroom and support — in that order.

At $50 per month for up to 5 seats on annual billing, Business is $10 per seat per month, which is the cheapest seat Descript sells by a wide margin. Creator covers 1–3 seats at $24, so a three-person team pays $8 per seat there and a four-person team cannot stay at all. The moment you need a fourth editor, Business stops looking expensive and starts looking like the only sensible option — and it arrives with 1,500 credits, 2 TB, a larger stock AI speaker library and priority support with an SLA attached.

The trap is the team that upgrades to Business because it ran out of hours. That team is paying $26 a month for 10 hours it could not have bought more cheaply anywhere on the list, and it would have been better served by a second Creator seat if the work could be split.

The Free-to-Paid Step

Free gives 60 minutes of media per month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p and a watermark. Hobbyist at $16 annually gives 10 hours, 400 monthly credits, 1080p and no watermark.

That step buys 9 hours of additional media for $16, or about $1.78 per additional hour — slightly worse than Hobbyist's own blended rate of $1.60. Which tells you what the step actually is: you are not buying capacity at the free-to-paid boundary, you are buying the watermark off. If the watermark and the 720p cap are not blocking you, staying on Free longer is rational.

Where the Bill Actually Goes Up

Three things move a Descript bill, and only one of them is usage:

1. A fourth person joins. Creator tops out at 3 seats. This is the most common upgrade trigger and it is a headcount event, not a usage event.
2. You start using the generative tooling seriously. Credits and hours drain independently, so a team well inside its media allowance can still be blocked.
3. You need SSO, SCIM or brand controls. That is Enterprise, which is custom-priced and negotiated rather than listed.

Notice that none of those is "we made more video". Descript is priced to grow with your team rather than with your output, which is worth knowing before you model a year of it.

The Honest Verdict on Value

Descript is not badly priced. It is priced like a workstation — a flat monthly cost for a wide set of tools, most of which any given customer will not use.

That is excellent value if you use the transcript editor, the recorder and the generative tooling. It is poor value if you bought it for one of the four products inside it, and the Descript alternatives page exists precisely for that case: a dedicated recorder, a dedicated clipper or a dedicated captioner will each cost less than Descript and do their one job at least as well.
