CPC Calculator
Cost per click is what one ad click cost you. Enter any two of ad spend, clicks and CPC to get the third, or convert a CPM and click-through rate into the price you are effectively paying for each click on impression-billed campaigns.

$1,800 over 1,500 clicks. Every $100 of this budget bought about 83.3 clicks.
CPC = Ad spend ÷ Clicks. Take spend and clicks from the same campaign, date range and click definition — link clicks if that is what the campaign is judged on.
CPC from CPM and CTR
Most social and video campaigns are billed per impression, so the cost of a click is set by two things: what the impressions cost and how often they are clicked.
Every 1,000 impressions cost $18 and return about 12 clicks at a 1.2% CTR. Halve the CTR and the same CPM buys clicks at twice the price.
CPC = CPM ÷ (1,000 × CTR), with CTR as a fraction — or CPM ÷ (10 × CTR%). Use the CTR that matches the click you pay for: link CTR for a link-click CPC.
Formula
CPC = Ad spend ÷ Clicks · CPC = CPM ÷ (1,000 × CTR)
Rearranged: Ad spend = CPC × Clicks, and Clicks = Ad spend ÷ CPC. In the second form CTR is a fraction (1.2% = 0.012), so with CTR as a percentage it reads CPC = CPM ÷ (10 × CTR%). Google Ads reports this figure as Avg. CPC — total cost of clicks ÷ total clicks — which is usually below your max CPC bid, because the auction charges what is needed to beat the next ad, not what you offered.
Worked example
A Search campaign spends $1,800 and gets 1,500 clicks. CPC = 1,800 ÷ 1,500 = $1.20. Holding that price, a 3,000-click month needs a $3,600 budget.
A Meta ad set pays an $18 CPM and earns a 1.2% link CTR. CPC = 18 ÷ (1,000 × 0.012) = $1.50. A new creative that lifts link CTR to 1.8% at the same CPM brings it down to $1.00.
What this tells you
CPC sits in the middle of the paid funnel: CPM and CTR set it from above, and conversion rate turns it into cost per conversion below. That position is why it is the most quoted ad metric and the easiest one to misread. A cheap click is only cheap if enough of those clicks convert — CPC ÷ conversion rate is your cost per conversion, so a $1 click that converts at 1% costs more per sale than a $3 click that converts at 5%.
How CPC is set depends on what you buy. On Google Search you bid per click, and Google says you pay only what is “minimally required” to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the advertiser below you. On Meta most objectives are billed per impression, so the CPC you see is CPM divided by the clicks those impressions produced — the second card above does that conversion.
To use CPC for a budget decision:
- Work out the CPC you can afford. Multiply the most you can pay for a conversion by your conversion rate: a $50 target cost per conversion at a 4% conversion rate supports a CPC up to $2.00. Get the rate from the conversion rate calculator.
- Compare it with what you are paying. The CPC tab gives your actual figure from spend and clicks. If it is above the affordable CPC, fix conversion rate or targeting before raising the budget.
- Size the budget from the click goal. The Spend tab prices the clicks you need. For a Search budget that starts from an industry preset instead of your own CPC, use the Google Ads cost calculator.

Common mistakes
Calling a channel cheap because its CPC is low. A Meta traffic click and a Google Search click are different purchases — compare cost per conversion on the same conversion definition.
Dividing spend by all clicks when the campaign is judged on link clicks. On Meta, CPC (all) counts reactions and profile taps too, so it always looks cheaper than cost per link click.
Treating max CPC as the price. On Google Search the average CPC you are billed is usually below your bid, and automated bidding replaces the bid with a target entirely.
Cutting CPC by moving to cheaper inventory without checking what those visitors do. Lower CPC with a falling conversion rate can raise cost per conversion.
When to use it
- Checking whether the price you pay per click fits the cost per conversion you can afford
- Sizing a Search budget from a click or traffic goal
- Comparing an impression-billed Meta campaign with a click-billed one by converting its CPM and CTR into an effective CPC
FAQ
What is a good cost per click?
One that leaves room for profit after conversion rate. The ceiling is your target cost per conversion × conversion rate: if a customer can cost $50 and 4% of clicks convert, any CPC up to $2.00 works. For outside context, WordStream by LocaliQ's 2026 data puts the median Google Search CPC at $5.42 (industry medians $1.63 to $9.87) and the median Meta traffic-campaign CPC at $0.60 — but those are medians of other advertisers' accounts, not targets for yours.
How do you calculate cost per click?
Divide total ad spend by total clicks for the same campaign and date range. $1,800 for 1,500 clicks is a $1.20 CPC. To plan rather than report: budget = CPC × clicks, and clicks = budget ÷ CPC. Google Ads shows the result as Avg. CPC; Meta shows CPC (cost per link click) and CPC (all), and the link-click version is the one to use for traffic and conversion campaigns.
How do I convert CPM to CPC?
CPC = CPM ÷ (1,000 × CTR), with CTR as a decimal. An $18 CPM at a 1.2% CTR is 18 ÷ 12 = $1.50 per click. The same formula shows why creative matters on impression-billed campaigns: doubling CTR halves CPC with no change in what the impressions cost.
Why is my actual CPC lower than my max CPC bid on Google Ads?
Because the auction charges the minimum needed to keep your position. Google's documentation says you pay only what is required to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the Ad Rank of the advertiser immediately below you, and only the reserve price if there is no one below. Your actual CPC can go above max CPC if Enhanced CPC or bid adjustments are on.
Why are Google Ads clicks so much more expensive than Facebook clicks?
WordStream by LocaliQ's 2026 Facebook report states that Google Ads CPC is more than double the average Meta CPC in its US data. Search clicks come from people typing what they want, so advertisers bid more for them; social clicks come from people scrolling. A pricier click that converts several times better can still produce the cheaper customer, which is why CPC should always be read next to conversion rate.
Is CPC the same as cost per conversion?
No. CPC is the price of a visit; cost per conversion is the price of the result you wanted from it. The link between them is conversion rate: cost per conversion = CPC ÷ conversion rate. A $1.20 click at a 4% conversion rate is a $30 conversion. If you have spend and conversions, the conversion rate calculator gives both numbers at once.
